Blending
The composition mode or blending mode of the brushes defines the method of mixing the color of the brush with the color already present on the current layer.
Most blending mode are standardized and used by image processing applications. You can display the list of blending modes in English or in your native language.
To display the modes in English:
•Select Edit Menu> Settings
•Display category
•Uncheck Translate composition modes

Normal |
Default composition mode. Mixing the color of the brush and the color of the layer according to the opacity. |
Foreground in |
The color is deposited only on the parts of the layer where there is already a color. |
Foreground out |
The color is deposited only on the parts of the layer where there is no color. |
Plus |
The color of the brush is added to the color of the layer: each red, green and blue component of the color of the brush is added to the red, green and blue component of the color of the layer. This mode of composition brightens the color. |
Multiply |
The color of the brush is multiplied with the color of the layer: each red, green, blue component of the brush color is multiplied respectively to the red, green and blue component of the color of the layer. The color of the brush is not removed if there is no color on the layer and the colors are darkened. |
Screen |
Same effect as Multiply mode, but the colors are enlightened. |
Overlay |
This mode combines Multiply and Overlay mode. The darker parts of the layer become darker and the light parts brighter. |
Darken |
This mode darkens the colors by retaining only the darkest color between the color of the brush and the color of the layer. |
Lighten |
This mode brightens the colors by retaining only the lightest color between the color of the brush and the color of the layer. |
Color dodge |
This mode intensifies colors and contrasts, it brightens the colors. |
Color burn |
This mode intensifies the contrast and darkens the colors. |
Hard light |
Highly intensifies light. |
Soft light |
Lightly intensifies light. |
Difference |
This mode performs the arithmetic difference of the 2 colors. |
Exclusion |
Effect similar to difference but with less contrast. |
Darker |
This mode takes the darker of the two colors. |
Lighter |
This mode takes the brightest of the two colors. |
Vivid light |
Eliminates or darkens the color depending on the gray level of the brush color. |
Pin light |
Creates an illumination effect. |
HSL hue |
Creates a color with the hue of the brush and the saturation and luminance of the layer. |
HSL saturation |
Creates a color with the saturation of the brush and the tint and luminosity of the layer. |
HSL luminosity |
Creates a color with the brightness of the brush and the saturation and hue of the layer. |
Dodge highlights |
This mode intensifies the colors and contrasts of the illuminated areas, it brightens the colors. |
Burn highlights |
This mode intensifies the contrast of the illuminated areas and darkens the colors. |
Dodge midtones |
This mode intensifies the colors and contrasts of medium tones, it brightens the colors. |
Burn midtones |
This mode intensifies the contrast of medium tones and darkens the colors. |
Dodge shadows |
This mode intensifies the colors and contrasts of the shaded areas, it brightens the colors. |
Burn shadows |
This mode intensifies the contrast of the shaded areas and darkens the colors. |
